Maintaining a quality or environmental management system involves a number of activities, particularly if it is certified to an international standard such as ISO 9001. Managing non-conformities or improving processes requires constant attention, but not necessarily on a full-time basis, depending on the size of a company or the complexity of its activities.

Some companies carry out these activities in conjunction with other related ones, such as training management.
