Quality management in the aerospace and defence sector

Standards for a safer and more efficient industry

The industry established the International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG), composed of representatives from the aerospace and defense sectors in the Americas, Asia-Pacific, and Europe. The objective of this group is to promote significant improvements in quality and reduce costs throughout the value chain.

The IAQG developed the 9100:2016 standard (AS for the English version and EN for the European version published in French in 2017). This standard is intended for organizations that design, develop, or supply products and services in the aerospace, space, and defense industries, as well as those that provide post-delivery services such as maintenance, spare parts, or materials for their own products and services.

The 9100:2016 standard, in its revision D, incorporates the new structure and requirements of ISO 9001:2015. It has also been enhanced to meet the expectations of industry stakeholders, through the revision of definitions, explanatory notes, and sector-specific requirements.

The AS9110 standard is an extension of 9100, designed specifically for organizations that provide maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services in the aerospace, space, and defense sectors. It incorporates the requirements of ISO 9001:2015 while adding criteria specific to maintenance activities, such as parts traceability, technical skills management, and regulatory compliance. This standard aims to ensure the safety, reliability, and quality of maintenance services throughout the product lifecycle.

The AS9120 standard, meanwhile, is intended for distributors of parts, components, and materials for the aerospace, space, and defense industries. It incorporates the requirements of ISO 9001:2015,
