The circular economy: a driver of sustainable transformation for businesses
The circular economy is a concept that is being discussed with increasing frequency, both in the public and private spheres. As a concrete tool for sustainable development for businesses, this model aims to reduce resource use, protect the environment, and extend the life of materials. Unlike the linear model, which quickly reaches its limits, the circular economy offers a more sustainable and responsible approach.
Quebec's Circularity Gap Report, published in 2021, revealed that the province's overall economy was only 3.5% circular, significantly below the global average, estimated at 8.6% in 2022.
In response to this development, in spring 2024, ISO developed a standardization of the circular economy through three new standards: ISO 59004 (Circular economy — Vocabulary, principles, and recommendations for implementation), ISO 59010 (Circular economy — Recommendations for transitioning business models and value networks), and ISO 59020 (Circular economy — Measurement and evaluation of circularity performance).
